We are a Roman Catholic parish in the Diocese of Manchester NH serving the North-East end of the city of Manchester, NH, with a deep devotion to the most precious Body and Blood of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, prayer, Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition, service and Evangelization; all inspired by the holy words of our patroness, St. Catherine, who said: "If You Are What You Should Be, You Will Set the World On Fire!"
St. Catherine of Siena Parish was established by the late Bishop Matthew F. Brady on September 24, 1954 to serve the growing population of the North end of Manchester. Msgr. John Foley was named the first pastor. At the time of the parish's foundation there were estimated to be 900 families. The parish grew rapidly, however, resulting in the construction of a new church and parish hall soon thereafter. Saint Catherine School was built in 1959.
Msgr. Foley passed away in 1966, after 12 years of dedicated leadership and service.
In January 1967 Msgr. Philip J. Kenney succeeded him. Four years later, in April 1971, Msgr. Kenney retired to serve as Vicar for Community Affairs for the diocese of Manchester.
Thereafter, Msgr. Thomas J. Hannigan became pastor of the parish for the next 36 years until he himself retired in early 2007.
At the time of Msgr Hannigan's retirement, Rev. Paul D. Montminy was appointed pastor. Fr Paul served as pastor until May 2018. Under the leadership of Fr. Paul, the church was renovated to include a gathering space, an elevator and a bell tower.
In October 2018, Rev. Fr. Christopher Martel was appointed the pastor of SCS.
St Catherine Parish is currently one of the most active and thriving parishes in the Diocese of Manchester.
Caterina Benincasa was born in Siena on March 25th 1347, the last of 25 children of the wealthy wool-dyer Jacopo Benincasa and Lapa di Puccio dé Piacenti.
At the age of six, Catherine received her first vision, near the Church of San Domenico. From this moment onwards the child began to follow a path of devotion, taking the oath of chastity only a year later. After initial resistance from her family, eventually her father gave in and left Catherine to follow her inclinations. In 1363, at just 15 years of age, Catherine donned the black cloak of the Dominican Tertiary sisters. In 1367 she began working tirelessly to help the sick at the hospital of Santa Maria della Scala.
As her fame spread throughout Christendom, during a visit to the city of Pisa Catherine received the stigmata from a wooden cross hanging in the Church of Santa Cristina. Her many travels abroad to act as mediator for the Papacy included a trip to Avignon, where she urged Pope Gregory to bring the Papal Court back to Rome from its exile in France.
Prayer to St. Catherine
O Catherine, most powerful Saint, neither the hearts of sinners,
nor heaven itself were able to resist your burning faith,
your words and your insistent prayers.
As in times past, so today,
may we feel the strength of your intercession for the brining of peace to all nations,
liberty to those oppressed by injustices and adversities of every kind,
comfort and health to those who are ill in mind and body.
Pray for the peace of the entire world,
the unity and faithfulness of the people of God to its supreme Pastor,
and for the good of our Country.
And remember me who trustingly invokes your aid,
knowing that you never abandon in their difficulties
those who consider you Mother and Guide.
Amen.
