Our Lord commanded his disciples, "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and behold, I am with you always, to the close of the age." (Matt 28:19 - 20)
It is clear that baptism is essential for becoming a Christian. St. Peter adds that baptism is even necessary for salvation. He says, "Baptism, which corresponds to this [Noah and his family being saved in the ark], now saves you" (1 Pet 3:21).
"Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit, and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission: 'Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water in the word" [CCC1213].
Therefore, The Sacrament of Baptism is not a mere symbol. It actually accomplishes that what is symbolizes: we are truly washed clean from our sins and the life of the divine Trinity begins to indwell in our souls! Only after Baptism is someone incorporated into the Body of Christ and becomes a "Christian." Knowing this, we can better understand why Baptism is such a prominent practice in the Catholic Church.
Please take a look at the adjacent links above for a biblical defense of the Sacrament of Baptism and baptism of infants. You may also read more about the sacrament in the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
If you wish to have your infant baptized, please contact the parish office. Baptisms are held the third Sunday of each month at 12:30 p.m. Parents are required to attend a baptismal catechesis on the Tuesday prior to the baptism at 7:00 p.m. Godparents are always invited and encouraged to attend the catechesis.
If you are an adult and have not yet been baptized, please visit the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) page for more information on how to become Catholic.
