Our Lord commanded his disciples, "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and behold, I am with you always, to the close of the age." (Matt 28:19 - 20)
It is clear that baptism is essential for becoming a Christian. St. Peter adds that baptism is even necessary for salvation. He says, "Baptism, which corresponds to this [Noah and his family being saved in the ark], now saves you" (1 Pet 3:21).
"Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit, and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission: 'Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water in the word" [CCC1213].
Therefore, The Sacrament of Baptism is not a mere symbol. It actually accomplishes that what is symbolizes: we are truly washed clean from our sins and the life of the divine Trinity begins to indwell in our souls! Only after Baptism is someone incorporated into the Body of Christ and becomes a "Christian." Knowing this, we can better understand why Baptism is such a prominent practice in the Catholic Church.
If you wish to have your infant baptized, please contact the parish office. We hold baptisms classes on the Tuesday prior to the third Sunday of the month at 7 pm in the Church. Families are asked to sign up prior to attending the class. Baptisms are typically done on the third Sunday of the month at 12:30 pm, but also can be scheduled at other times. Each infant to be batpized will need a Godmother and Godfather. To qualify as a Godparent, a person must be at least 15 years old, be a practicing Catholic who is fully initaited into the Catholic faith (recieved Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist), and is in good standing with the faith.
For any child that is over 6 years old or any teen or adult who has not yet been baptized, please visit the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) page for more information on how to become Catholic.
