"Of all devotions, that of adoring Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament is the greatest after the sacraments, the one dearest to God and the one most helpful to us." - St. Alphonsus Liguori
It is the worship and adoration of our Lord Jesus Christ in the consecrated host. Catholics believe Jesus becomes fully present body, blood, soul, and divinity at the moment of consecration during the Mass. The substance of bread and wine no longer remain. Instead, it is Jesus, present as much as he was before his disciples, in the appearance of bread and wine. Therefore, it is right and just to worship and adore him it the consecrated host, whether safely stored in the tabernacle or exposed on the altar.Eucharistic Adoration enables a soul to enter into a more profound and intimate relationship with our Lord. It prepares the soul for Holy Communion, in which the soul and Jesus become unified in love.
Pope Benedict XVI said, "Adoration is essentially an embrace with Jesus in which I say to him: 'I am yours, and I ask you, please stay with me always.'" When we are in the presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist, we can follow St. Peter's advice when he said, "cast all your anxieties on him, for he cares about you." (1 Pt 5:7)
You can adore Jesus in the Eucharist in diverse ways. Many parishes expose the consecrated host (called "exposition") for a certain amount of time once a month, once a week, or even 24 hours a day! (St. Catherine of Siena Parish has Eucharistic Adoration every Wednesday from 9:30 - 5:00 PM). Of course, you may always visit a Catholic church and kneel before the tabernacle. Finally, you should always adore our Lord in the sacred Mass at the moment of consecration, when you receive him in Holy Communion, and for a few minutes after Mass during thanksgiving.
We are always in need of Adorers on a regular basis and also on a fill-in basis. If you are interested, please call the parish office. It is the best time you will spend on earth, guaranteed!
