The word novena is derived from the Latin novum, meaning nine.

A Novena is a set of prayers that are said over a period of time - generally 9 days (but they could also be prayed over 9 weeks or 9 months if one so chose). They are generally prayed to obtain special graces, to implore special favors or to make special petitions. The prayers often have a sense of urgency and neediness and the nine days recall the nine days that the Apostles and the Vigin Mary spent in prayer between Ascension Thursday and Pentecost Sunday.
